The joint forces of an Aussie and a Briton aren't often seen in many situations, especially when it comes to music let alone hip hop. Originally from the UK, MC Doctor Freud and Melbourne based producer Methodz, together known as Purple Rain, are ripping it up on their five track debut EP. Doctor Freud is known for his witty rhymes and now resides in Sydney, Australia with a solo album due to be released soon. The pair have supported acts such as Bliss n Eso on their Flying Colours Tour and are regarded highly by fellow upcoming artists Pez and 360.
Opinion:
I have good news and bad news; let's start with the bad. I can never quite understand the over-use of the letter Z suffix on artists' titles. It doesn't do anything for show and looks absolutely ridiculous to the semi-intelligent listeners... coming to you from Breezy Music Newz. But on a serious note, it's not creating a more attractive image whatsoever.
That said, this short 20 minute EP is nothing to laugh about. I'm impressed by Doctor Freud's humorous yet clever lyrics that don't interfere with his composed flow. Sure, a British accent isn't all what I expected straight up from a group classified in the Australian hip hop scene but after a careful examination it grew on me after several sessions.
The Winter Stormz EP kicks off with the creative rhymes and catchy sample loop of 'Touch a Nerve'. The only concerns I have with this track and with almost every other track are the ludicrous amount of repetitive chorus repeats. On the first track, I counted the use of the phrase 'Touch a Nerve' Thirty Six (36) times in four minutes.
The remaining tracks are on the borderline of interesting but the tight cuts from Methodz don't fail to impress. The inclusion of the highly relevant Chaser's Chris Taylor skit at the end of 'I'm over you' fits in well with the aura of the track. The repetitive chorus is again an annoyance. 'Rockstar' seems like more of a fun-type track and the remaining beats don't really seem to have a meaningful addition to the finished product.
I just have to mention the final track, 'Trauma' really doesn't make sense here. A depressing turnaround is explained by the Doctor, almost contradicting every point made in the track 'Rockstar'. Put short - first it's explained how easy and enjoyable life is as a rock star, then how hard life is because 'depression has found me' without any mention if and how these two completely opposite lifestyles relate. That's alright, just throw in another ten chorus repeats.
Summary:
Impressive beats and thoroughly written
Repetitive lyrics at times but overall a decent first EP
Breezy Rating: 2.5 out of 5
