Review: Bliss n Eso - Flying Colours
Monday
Released: 26 April 2008
Label: Illusive Sounds
Website: www.blissneso.com
Artist:
Presenting the third studio album by 'Syd City's finest' hip hop outfit (as they call themselves). The trio comprise of MC Bliss (Jonathon Notley), MC Eso (Max Mackinnon) and DJ Izm (Tarik Ejjamai) who all met in their high school years. Their passion for hip hop has led them to their local fame and many nominations for various music awards.
Opinion:
Day of the dog was an awesome album, flowers in the pavement was great and the mixtape was impressive. Flying Colours is somewhat different on the other hand... This album comprises of so many different styles, it's almost like it's never been done before in Aussie Hip Hop.
I'll be honest, at first I hated it and was somewhat disappointed with my signed copy. After a few listens it grew on me, but Flying Colours still doesn't really hit the sweet spot.
Bliss n Eso have incorporated a new 'theme' into their work where every few songs a 1950's vocal quote will appear totally out of context. The only real conclusion I can come to is that they are trying to make a dark/gloomy/scary themed album with a twist of retro. The only problem is that it really goes nowhere... There's no real 'storyline' to the album which doesn't flow very well from one song to the next.
Track Highlights:
Zion Bash
The beat is great - just like their old stuff. From what I gather it's about partying like zion (from the matrix?) The only issue is that this party is over too quickly at 2mins 51s
Eye of the Storm
A great recap about Bliss n Eso's journey over the years - very insightful
The Sea is Rising
Global warming. Real
Field of Dreams (Feat. Paris Wells)
Finally a female voice!
Tracks that suck big time:
Woodstock 2008
Who the fuck decided this would be the single? Sure, it might get you pumped up for when you're doing your weights at the gym but this song really doesn't mean anything
Happy in my Hoody
As mentioned in their interview on Triple J Radio, this was a 'fun song' that they decided to do - well how does that fit into the dark/gloomy theme? It doesn't!
$5 Steak
Is this meant to be a remix of some 1940's blue's song? I'm not feelin' this at all
Extras:
Make sure you get the bonus disc with 5 extra tracks
Old fans beware - it's very different to the last album
If this is the future of Aussie hip hop then I'm worried for their next album
Breezy Rating: 3 out of 5

Hilltop Hoods, Pegz, Muph + Plutonic

I complety disagree, 1st how could you say this album is dark when its got songs like bullet and a target. I think its a big step forward in ozzie hip hop, if you listen to the the way they structure there verses (gorilla militia) and the content of there lyrics (the sea is rising) you will find this album is a great effort
For a start, Bullet and a Target isn't even original BnE. It's a cover of a 2004 song by Citizen Cope. I have the song, look it up. It is a great effort but it isn't anything like their original work. By the way, you spelled 'there' wrong, it should be 'their'. I still stand by my review
"by the way" no matter how much you try to discredit my post by pointing out the fact that the HOOK is a cover or that my spelling is not so crash hot you're still a wanker
This is a crap album - I listened to it once, then I deleted everything bar Woodstock 2008, Zion Bash and Bullet and a Target. It just doesn't work..
Nevermind, Hilltop Hoods are still Aussie Hip-hops finest.
I completely disagree with this review too! It will maybe sound crazy but for me, it's the best rap album I've heard in maybe 3 years. Ok "Bullet ans a Target" is not an original but the remake is simply great. And this is rap music ! NOTHING is original, this music is made with samples ! I sipmly love the way they rap, the beats...
'WHAT THE BLEEP DO YOU KNOW?'
I guess anyone can paste their idiotic reviews on the net these day. I really hope you don't actually get paid for your shallow effortless attempt at reviewing music. Not only is Bliss N Eso's music great to listen to, it has a lot to say to people everywhere.
They bring attention to real political issues in a way that a younger generation can understand and relate to. They promote acceptance, multiculturalism and peace. Their music always has a positive attitude and is true to their personal opinions and morals.
These boys certainly are "Syd City's Finest" and I cant wait to see where their music takes them.
By the way, if your that disappointed, send your signed copy this way... I wont mind having 2 in my collection.
